At least thirteen passengers perish and 98 hurt in train derailment in Mexico.

A fatal railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the speed and management of the country's flagship government projects.

The disaster happened on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link built to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.

“We shall thoroughly investigate the cause of this incident,” affirmed the head of state.

The leader reported that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The president stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.

Key Undertaking of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the previous administration, whose term ended the prior year. This project was a hallmark of his administration's economic goals for the southeastern region.

Another massive railway undertaking from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to revitalize the economy of a comparatively poorer part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Worries

The construction of both train projects was overseen by the armed forces, marking a significant growth of its role in public projects. They were executed at an accelerated rate, beating forecasts to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that administration.

However, this rushed timetable had concurrently fueled significant apprehensions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This includes an earlier crash this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-fatal derailments.

Calls for Audit and Pause

In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the head of a primary political opposition called for an immediate pause in the building and running of all comparable projects.

This halt was suggested until the completion of a full independent investigation. The party emphasized that the loss of life "demands prompt explanations."

In reply, the national leader maintained that the train had been operating in complete adherence to all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the construction and running of these national undertakings.
