EU Could Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson States

The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the US against five European individuals involved in fighting online hate and misinformation, an EU official has said.

European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans were placed on figures who have been at the heart of efforts to enact laws regulating US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure US companies to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in criticizing the move.

The restrictions were enacted this week against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

The DSA is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders argue the regulations are necessary to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This row threatens to become part of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash involving Washington and Europe.
