This New Horror Film Can Be Streamed, and It Might Make or Break Your Partnership.

Consider this a dare for those in enduring partnerships who enjoy scary movies: Get comfortable with your partner and view Together. The independent film success of 2025 recently had its launch on a streaming platform on Hulu. On the surface, it might appear like typical physical horror, but inside Together exists a profound meditation about our choices in loving each other.

A Debut Feature Exploring Partnership Complexities

Together represents the debut feature-length film for director Michael Shanks. It stars the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, an unmarried couple that have been together for ten years. Married in actuality in 2017, Franco and Brie contribute a particular energy to their characters, masterfully depicting both the strengths and weaknesses of a committed partnership.

The narrative starts when the couple transition from the urban environment to the country for professional reasons. A commonly used narrative setup, admittedly, but that’s mostly where the tropes cease. Together evolves into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the couple's dynamic as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While hiking near their new home, a storm hits, and the protagonists discover an subterranean cavern. After a night spent there and eventually escaping, a supernatural entity starts to affect the duo. This force creates a otherworldly bond between them that goes far beyond simple connection.

The entire film is a slow burn of scares, weaving in elements of dreamlike terrors, disturbing (but never too gross) physical transformations, and surprisingly comedic interactions (sometimes amidst something horrific). The director skillfully blends these components expertly and wraps them up in a gradually swelling atmosphere of fear.

Complex Characterizations

A significant portion of Together is only the performances of its stars, and they masterfully render countless layers to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie's sense of self and feeling of intimacy is suffering due to a distance. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his unwillingness to chase only his floundering music career gradually emerges.

Tim, on the other hand senses confinement and separated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve relocated rural and removed from his support system. He is terrified of the idea of totally forfeiting his sense of self in another person. This fear is further exacerbated by the fact he lacks a driver's license and relies on Millie for transportation.

Shanks’ smartest move in this movie refrains from painting Tim or Millie the definite antagonist.

The couple confront the kind of problems that are inherent in most partnerships over a long period. Deep down, they continue to care for one another. They share moments of joy, comfort one another, and share intimately at times. But beneath it all, there’s an inescapable current of uncertainty about their bond.

Allegory and Meaning

While the paranormal elements in Together represent these concerns of excessive reliance and totally devoting oneself to a partner, the symbolism avoids being overly obvious or heavy-handed. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes present a ideal counterpart to the relationship narrative. Both the frights and the fights enhance each other symbiotically.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s conclusion, which is best experienced firsthand, has left audiences divided on the story's concluding statement about codependent relationships. Accounts suggest that single viewers have seen the movie as a compelling reason for staying single. Conversely, some couples having disagreements found that the film ultimately assisted them reconcile.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own interpretation could act as a telling indicator of how you think about commitment. Will the conclusion plant feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you see yourself in either protagonist and yell at the screen, or simply turn to your other half and state, “I’d do that for you”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an exploration you can undertake at this very moment.

Together is streaming on Hulu now.
