Retatrutide is an investigational injectable developed by US drugmaker Eli Lilly. The drug affects three intestinal hormones – GLP-1, GIP and glucagon. Preliminary studies indicate it could help individuals lose up to 25% of their total weight. Referred to as the “triple G”, the substance is being hailed online as the next Ozempic.
Healthcare Experts Express Worries
However, physicians and chemists have warned that the sale of what is still an unapproved medication in the UK is worrisome and could lead to individuals injecting substances of unknown origin.
Some professionals stated the demand for the experimental drug could be connected to the rising cost of approved slimming treatments such as Mounjaro.
Regulatory Status and Implementation
Marketing the unapproved drug on social media or Telegram is prohibited in the United Kingdom, as it is an unlicensed medication that must not be promoted or supplied for personal consumption under the British medical regulations.
Some influencers attempt to circumvent the regulations by referring to the drug as a “research chemical” or citing it as “not for human consumption”. Retatrutide is not a controlled substance, but advertising and distribution can still violate medicines, marketing, and customer laws, potentially leading to penalties, prosecution or prison.

According to the social media company, the service has removed violative material and banned associated hashtags and query recommendations. The organization said it was dedicated to maintaining the service secure and allocating resources in strengthening compliance measures.
Digital Marketplace Operations
Investigations also found groups with up to nine thousand participants selling the experimental drug using Telegram's built-in search feature, which operates like a online catalog. Entering “retatrutide” instantly brings up channels with thousands of members, filled with images of slimming results, glowing testimonials and step-by-step guides for preparing or administering at residence.
Within moments of joining one group, a seller shared WhatsApp details, where the majority of purchases occur. The seller sent an guidebook and guaranteed shipping within 48 hours. When asked whether the product was genuine, one vendor said: “You can’t be sure.” Another shared a image of a supposed testing documentation. Not one inquired about weight, health issues or previous experience.
Item Details and Pricing
Inside these groups, messages display dark colored packages with postal service labels, stating to include fresh supplies. One message stated: “It took eight of us to load them this morning.”
Customers can select between powder vials, mixed at residence with sterile water, or ready-to-use injectors usually sold at 160 pounds for 20mg. When asked how much time a pen should last, vendors give conflicting responses ranging from a several days to “depends on your body”.
Platform Moderation and Safety Measures
A spokesperson for the messaging service stated it regularly moderated harmful content on its platform including material that promoted the “misuse of controlled medications”. The company added that it eliminated “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.
Medical Professional Warnings
“People are administering substances they cannot confirm. Although the science behind retatrutide is sound, these online products may not include what they advertise,” stated Jason Murphy, the director of pharmaceutical services at Chemist4U.
Dr Crystal Wyllie of an online medical service linked the increase in demand to current price rises for approved weight-loss medications such as Mounjaro. “With costs increasing, individuals are using online platforms. But fake injections are highly risky. You can’t be certain what’s contained or whether the environment they were made in was sterile,” she explained.
Her team has already seen individuals injured by personal administration from unverified sources. “We recognize the frustration, but buying from Telegram or WhatsApp is taking chances with your well-being,” said the doctor. “These substances could be impure or improperly measured.”
Producer Position
A representative from Eli Lilly said retatrutide was in third stage clinical trials and had not been evaluated or authorized by any government authority anywhere in the world. “Consequently at this time no one can market [it] for personal consumption,” they explained, noting that any product “falsely representing itself as a Lilly investigational product not yet approved … may subject users to potentially significant health risks”.
